[EQ] What kind of State? What kind of equality?

What kind of State? What kind of equality?

Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC/CEPAL) - June 2010

Available online PDF [88p.] at:  http://bit.ly/aevdkH

Spanish: ¿Qué Estado para qué igualdad?
French: Quel genre d'État pour quel genre d'égalité?
Portuguese: Que tipo de Estado? Que tipo de igualdade?

The document analyses the progress of gender equality in the region of the Americas 15 years after the approval of the Beijing Platform for Action, 10 years after the drafting of the Millennium Development Goals and 3 years after the adoption of the Quito Consensus at the tenth session of the Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean.

It also examines the achievements made and challenges faced by governments in light of the interaction between the State, the market and families as social institutions built on the foundation of policies, laws, and customs and habits which, together, establish the conditions for renewing or perpetuating gender and social hierarchies.

“…….The report emphasizes the need to raise awareness of the economic and social value of the unpaid and care work performed by women in the region. It also stresses the importance of empowering women to exercise their right to choice, so that they can participate under equal conditions in the labour market and in decision-making.

It proposes a strategy for advancing equality, based on three main pillars:
- the State as a guarantor of effective entitlement to rights;
- equality in both public and private spheres; and
- redistribution of total work.

The report was presented by ECLAC at the 11th session of the Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean, which began today in the Brazilian capital, Brasiliahttp://www.eclac.cl/mujer/conferencia/default.asp   ..”
