“….There are 468 million people working in the Americas; 283 million (two thirds) are located in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Of the 283 million, about 52% work in the informal economy, where working conditions are often poor, and employment benefits are nonexistent. This situation has a major impact on the health and the quality of life of working men and women, resulting in health inequities that adversely affect sustainable development, and threaten the productivity and prosperity of the Region. …” ….EMCONET: http://bit.ly/wniVNU

SDE Seminar Series towards Rio+20

"Human beings are at the centre of concerns for sustainable development.
They are entitled to a healthy and productive life in harmony with nature" - Principle 1 of the Rio…..”
Declaration on Environment and Development, 1992.

The Rio Declaration of 1992 recognizes that healthy populations are central to human progress and sustainable development, and remains equally true today. However, the economic pillar has been prioritized at the expense of the social and environmental pillars of sustainable development over the last few decades, becoming itself a source of volatility and destabilization.

The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, Rio+20, now offers an opportunity to re-examine the relationship between health and sustainable development. The proposed SDE Seminar series towards Rio+20 aim at contributing to this important debate by bringing different themes of relevance to sustainable development and health to inform all areas of the Pan American Organization about the themes under discussion in the Rio Conference, but also to inform public health stakeholders and other decision makers in the health sector, to better take part in the debate.

The SDE Seminar series will happen every Wednesday   from 12 to 1pm (Washington time), from February 8 to June 13th.

All Seminars will be life-streamed, and opened for participation in person at the PAHO/WHO HQ, or via Elluminate, or via telephone line.
Some of the Seminars will be in English, others in Spanish.

For those who cannot follow the seminar alive, they will be available later at PAHO Rio+20 Toolkit at: http://bit.ly/oxoRdS

[EQ] United Nations E-Government Survey 2012 - E-Government for the People

“……To support efforts in e-government and information communications technologies (ICTs) for socio-economic development. The United Nations e-Government Survey assesses the e-government development of the 192 Member States of the United Nations according to a quantitative composite index comprising

(i)                   information and e-services,
(ii) telecommunication infrastructure, and
(iii) human capital endowment.

In addition, the United Nations e-Government Survey assesses the capability and capacity of governments around the world to encourage e-participation for effective public policy decision making.

“……Progress in online service delivery continues in most countries around the world. The United Nations E-Government Survey 2012 finds that many have put in place e-government initiatives and information and communication technologies applications for the people to further enhance public sector efficiencies and streamline governance systems to support sustainable development. Among the e-government leaders, innovative technology solutions have gained special recognition as the means to revitalize lagging economic and social sectors.

The overall conclusion that emerges from the 2012 Survey in today’s recessionary world climate is that while it is important to continue with service delivery, governments must increasingly begin to rethink in terms of e-government – and e-governance  – placing greater emphasis on institutional linkages between and among the tiered government structures in a bid to create synergy for inclusive sustainable development. An important aspect of this approach is to widen the scope of e-government for a transformative role of the government towards cohesive, coordinated, and integrated processes and institutions through which such sustainable development takes place…..”
